Prague/Krakow/Vienna trip report
Question:
Intresting post, thanks. I was thinking about a trip to Prague, vienna, and Budapest. Anybody have an opinion on whether Krakow would be a better choice than Budapest for the third city. * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!

Budapest is nice, too. I enjoyed it very much on a previous trip. It is much larger than Krakow, so I guess it depends whether you prefer a smaller city or a larger one. Heather

Hello, just got back from the cities above and wanted to share a few notes which may or may not be helpful to others. In Prague we stayed at the Hotel Tri Korunek in Zizkov, still a favorite spot for being cheap, clean, and close to Wenceslas Square (two tram stops on the #9). I don’t recommend the breakfast buffet, but the hotel is a good pick if you’re on a budget. Triple room US $70 before tourist season, $125 during. Phone is 42/2/27 21 09 Did all the usual Prague sightseeing in three days. Had an EXCELLENT dinner at an enormously atmospheric cellar restaurant called U Hvezd (At the Stars?). Address is Karlovo Nam. 24, tel. is 2223 2382. We had a terrible time finding it because it 1) it’s in the basement of the Brunuv dom and 2) it had been renamed–we were looking for Zlaty Kohout. Anyway, Filet for three people, one shared dessert, appetizers, a bottle of wine, cokes and a cognac came out to US$52 including the tip. And everything was absolutely divine and the service was much better than your typical Prague waiters. See review (under the former name) at http://www.praguepost.cz/rest/zkohout.html If you’re looking for good, cheap pizza and pasta, the Pizzeria Colosseum on Vodickova works well. Took train to Krakow, where we had a couple of days. In Poland, our best meal was at Peasant’s Kitchen (Chlopskie Jadlo) on Sw Agnieski Street. Rustic wooden surroundings, excellent food, great experience. Spent about $30 for three people. We stayed at the Hotel Polonia right across from the train station. My friend described this hotel as "elegant, but not." Had kind of a faded, worn prettiness. Front desk service was surly and the beds were hard. Breakfast not good. I don’t think I’d go there again. Tour to Auschwitz through Cracow City Tours, about $22. This was my second time on this tour and was pleased with it again. City just as lovely and pleasant as I’d remembered it but prices seemed higher. Anyone know whether Polish economy is changing significantly? Train to Vienna. Stayed at the Hotel Nordbahn on Praterstrasse, near the ferris wheel. EXCELLENT hotel–$130 for a four-bed "apartment" room, $90 for a single room. Delicious buffet, free internet access, roof garden, nice rooms, helpful staff. Seemed to cater to business travellers but worked very well for us. City center/Stephansplatz just two stops on the U-Bahn. Ate a good meal at Zum Kuckuk on Himmelpfortgasse, total bill about $70 for three people. Right next door was an EXCELLENT wine bar and wine cellar run by a very helpful, friendly Austrian man. We bought about 12 bottles to take home. Can’t remember the name of his shop but it had an owl on the sign. Tour to Schonnbrun about $28, felt we got our money’s worth. Most things in Vienna expensive but generally worth it. Weather in Prague and Krakow pleasant and mild, freezing and windy in Vienna.
