Campervan in Austria?
Question:
You should check with the national tourism bureaus of the countries you’re going to visit. They can provide you with a map of al official campsites. In Hungary campsites are spread out over the country but you are most likeley to find them near a Spa, although somewhat more expensive and often very crowded during the season they usually have a place for one or two nights. Yes of course you can do so. A lot of Europeans (including myself) do the same… > We can handle the driving, operating the campervan, etc. But is this > practical in Austria/Czech/Hungary??
Why not? Speaking for Austria there are some mountain roads that are not too easy to drive on but even on the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse you can see (small) motorhomes and busses. > Is it easy to find campground in these countries, how about free > camping, i.e. find a nice spot and spend the night? According to the ADAC Campground Guide there are about 500 campgrounds in Austria, I unfortunately do not know the number for Czechoslovakia and Hungary, but there are a lot of them listed in this Guide. The fee depends on season and equipment of the campground. In Austria it is e.g. ATS 400.- on a top campgroud we like to stay in August ( http://www.eurocamp-koessen.com ). It should be less on worse equipped campgrounds and in Hungary and Czechoslovakia. Free camping isn’t allowed in Hungary and Czechoslovakia, but it is allowed in Austria, except in Vienna and in Tyrol. > Hope to hear from anyone with some experience with this in Europe.

Hi: We plan to spend 3 weeks total in Austria, Czech, and Hungary, and would like to try campervan. We had some experience traveling this way in New Zealand, and are wondering if we can do the same in Europe. We can handle the driving, operating the campervan, etc. But is this practical in Austria/Czech/Hungary?? Is it easy to find campground in these countries, how about free camping, i.e. find a nice spot and spend the night? How much is camping fee? Hope to hear from anyone with some experience with this in Europe. Regards, Ray Vancouver, Canada
