According to Route 66 (great program! get it!), Munich to Vienna and back, with a side-trip to Wattens, will be about 650 miles. If you go from Wattens back to Munich by way of Bern, your total distance grows to almost 1100 miles. You’ve only got a 10-day holiday; how much time do you want to spend in the car? cheers, Henry

My expectation was winding steep roads, but the Swiss roads I used a couple of weeks ago were surprisingly moderate, quite well-engineered for the most part. Only the altered engine sounds and popping ears gave a clue as to high you’d really gotten. You pay 40 francs once to use the roads, and they collect it at the border.

I do not know about your personal interest in places (how much time you need there) like Vienna and Salzburg. I would fit it in. The roads to Berne are motorways, so you will be able to move much faster than in the US! There are obligatory toll-stickers for Austria and another one for Switzerland if you want to use the motorways. (Salzburg – Vienna is about 3 hours on the motorway, Salzburg-Innsbruck – using the motorway through Germany (Rosenheim) – about 1,5 h!, Innsbruck – Bern about 4h. So you see that you won’t have long travel times between your places!) lg Gernot

I’ve heard several rumours of USAirways closing, but nothing official — including a supposed email that’s being sent out to Dividend Miles members (which I am). Can you tell me where you got this information? I read the first quarter earnings report, and while it said they were applying for a loan and would be "restructuring" if they didn’t get one, it’s a bit of a leap from restructuring to going belly up. Response:
On CNBC all day today, the story was that USAir was trying to get federal loan guarantees but in order to do that they would have to take severe cost-cutting measures, including concessions from the unions. Since the unions are unlikely to agree, the likely outcome would be bankruptcy. BTW, we are also dividend mile members (our tickets to Munich are the result of FF miles) and have not received any emails related to this issue. > I’ve heard several rumours of USAirways closing, but nothing official — > including a supposed email that’s being sent out to Dividend Miles > members (which I am). > Can you tell me where you got this information?
